Day 1 Oban
From Edinburgh we travel to Paisley, famed for its Abbey and its patterned fabrics. We visit the birthplace of William Wallace before heading to Dumbarton. Loch Lomond is breathtaking as we travel on to Inverary and view its castle. Following Loch Fyne we reach Kilmartin Glen and stop to visit its ancient stone circles, before reaching Oban. (D)
Day 2 Oban
Today we sail across the Firth of Lorne to Mull, seeing Duart Castle on the way. Driving across the untouched landscape, we take a short ferry ride to the mystic Island of Iona, home to St Columba, where we see the ancient ruins of the Nunnery and the Abbey. (B)
Day 3 Kintail
We pass through glorious scenery via Glen Orchy and Rannoch Moor to dramatic Glen Coe. Then to Fort William before taking the “Road to the Isles” to Loch Shiel and Glenfinnan, where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard. Following the Caledonian Canal we see the spectacular mountain of Ben Nevis, Britain’s tallest mountain. (B,D)
Day 4 Inverness
Travelling to Skye, we visit Dunvegan Castle or the Museum of Island Life and remember Flora MacDonald, who helped Bonnie Prince Charlie escape after his defeat at the Battle of Culloden. Then we cross the Skye Bridge to the Kyle of Lochalsh before reaching Loch Ness, famous for its elusive monster. (B)
Day 5 Fife
Today it’s the Battle of Culloden and we visit the excellent museum. Then on to one of the many whisky distilleries in the Strathspey area. Next, Braemar located not far from the Queens’s summer residence, Balmoral. Its back to the Lowlands and St Andrews this evening for a local Scottish meal. (B,D)
Day 6 Edinburgh
Today we visit Dunfermline Abbey, the burial place of Robert the Bruce, followed by Bannockburn visiting and the remarkable Stirling Castle before our return to Edinburgh. The tour ends back in Edinburgh late afternoon at one of our tour hotels. (B)
