Itinerary

Day 1     Lake District
Departing Manchester we head north to this treasured corner of England. Our first stop is at the stately home of Holker Hall, a rose coloured neo-Elizabethan mansion. We continue through stunning scenery and drop into Beatrix Potter’s Hill Top Farm (featured in the film Miss Potter). Travelling into the heart of the Lake District, we visit England’s largest natural lake, Lake Windermere, before reaching our local accommodation. (D)

Day 2      Lake District
We begin our adventurous day by stopping in at the home of another literary great, Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage. We then enjoy a relaxing drive through some of England’s most rugged landscape and really immerse ourselves amongst the breathtaking natural beauty of the Lake District and stopping to explore the market town of Keswick before arriving at our local accommodation. (B)

Day 3    Yorkshire Dales
Today’s journey takes us from the drama of the Lakes to the beauty of Yorkshire Dales country. This landscape is rich in monastic heritage and our stop at The World Heritage Site of Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal will sure to impress. Later this afternoon we visit the old fashioned town of Thirsk which inspired James Herriot’s popular veterinary tales. We rest in our rustic accommodation before enjoying a delicious local evening meal. (B,D)

Day 4     Yorkshire Dales
Truly a day of contrasts, we start by making the trip over the heather carpeted North York Moors to the coastal town of Whitby and Captain Cook country. This is the location of Bram Stocker’s Dracula as well as being famous for its picturesque harbour, fine beaches and brooding Abbey. We continue our journey to aristocratic Castle Howard to meander amongst the sumptuous 18th century stately home and gardens. (B)

Day 5    Manchester
Our final day in Yorkshire is dominated by the splendours of York. York offers a feast of sites for all ages and interests, including England’s greatest cathedral and Europe’s best preserved medieval street. Following a walking and orientation tour with your guide, time is then yours to sample this city’s highlights before we make our way to Howarth Parsonage, home of the Bronte sisters. The tour ends back in Manchester late afternoon at one of our tour hotels. (B)
