Itinerary

Day 1     Prague
Arriving in Prague, you have ample opportunity to explore this marvellous city before our group meets this evening for a delicious traditional meal at a local restaurant. (D)

Day 2     Prague
Situated on the bank of River Vltava in central Bohemia, the beautiful city of Prague is steeped in history and culture. We embark on a fascinating guided walking tour of the old centre of this splendid city. Crossing the memorial Charles Bridge, we visit captivating sites such as the Old Jewish Quarter, Hradcany Castle, Powder Tower, Tyne Church and Wenceslas Square.  This evening is at your leisure, there are an impressive number of fabulous restaurants, bars and classical venues where you may catch a performance or enjoy a delicious meal. (B)

Day 3    Cesky Krumlov
We probe deeper into this rich Bohemian region and discover two World Heritage sites. The first is historic Kutna Hora, once known as the jewel of the country and is home to a number of exquisite buildings including The Church of St Barbara and the Cathedral of Our Lady at Sedlec. The old town also features a famous cemetery chapel with an ossuary of approximately 40,000 bones. Our next Heritage Site is the charming city of Cesky Krumlov, known for its Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. Stroll its ancient streets, or relax and enjoy a local beer in Old Town Square before tonight’s meal. (B,D)

Day 4      Vienna
Crossing the border into Austria, we adjourn for a moving visit to the former concentration camp at Mauthausen, one of the largest Nazi controlled labour camps in Europe during World War II. We then continue alongside the Danube River and meander through the spectacular countryside, to the lovely town of Melk, which overlooks the river and makes a splendid location for lunch. We cannot visit this quaint town without looking round its resplendent abbey, used by Napoleon as his headquarters during his campaign against Austria. We continue onto Austria’s capital city, Vienna, another World Heritage Site and home to opulent imperial palaces and grand city squares. (B)

Day 5        Vienna
Vienna is a wonderfully cultured city, once the home of Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, Schubert, Strauss, Brahms, Mahler and Schönberg. We follow its 19th century ‘Ringstrasse,’  which encircles the old part of the city, and marvel at the city’s most famous buildings, including the State Opera House, St Stephen’s Cathedral, Vienna’s illustrious Hapsburg palaces on the Belvedere grounds and the grandiose Schönbrunn Palace. Tonight is a particular highlight as we enjoy dinner in the magnificent Kursalon followed by a Strauss or Mozart concert. (B,D)

Day 6           Vienna
Today is completely free for you to enjoy the many things this vivacious city has to offer.  Perhaps visit to its famous and revolutionary Hundertwasser House, now a colourful and popular landmark.  For those who would like a slower pace, Vienna’s numerous coffee houses offer a refuge where you can relax as you take in your surroundings. (B)

Day 7              Budapest
We leave Austria and continue along the Danube River, arriving in the small town of Esztergom, the historic capital of Hungary for more than two centuries. Here we visit the famous Basilica, Hungary’s tallest building.  We enjoy more Hungarian countryside as we travel though small towns and villages onto our way to another of Europe’s finest cities, the enchanting city of Budapest, where we will spend our next two nights. (B)

Day 8            Budapest
The Hungarian capital of Budapest offers a wealth of cultural, historical and architectural sites that will be a feast for the eyes. We enjoy a guided tour of the city where we are introduced to some of its most evocative landmarks, including the Liberation Memorial, Roosevelt Square, Chain Bridge, St Mathias' Cathedral and Fisherman's Bastion. We drive up to the Castle District with its cobbled streets and network of underground tunnels which you may then later explore further at your leisure. Tonight will be a special hearty farewell dinner of Hungarian Goulash. (B)
